Driving to Hoover Dam is very safe and is only a 30 mile drive from Vegas. To get there, drive east on Flamingo Road or Tropicana Avenue to U.S. 515 South, which automatically turns into I-93 South and that takes you right to the dam.

Grand Canyon on the other hand is a different story. It’s about a 3 hour drive to the west rim and 5 hour drive to the north rim and the roads are not that great because it’s mostly a 2 way lane.

As stated before, Hoover Dam is not far from Vegas at all.

To go to the Canyon, we just mapquested from our hotel to the Grand Canyon National Park (which takes you to the main entrance at the South Rim, about a 5 hour drive from Vegas). The roads were fine, but not much to look at by way of scenery once you get past Kingman (not a bad idea to top off your gas tank here, even if you think you don’t need it - there are other gas stations along the way, but few and far between, and if you fill up in Kingman you will have plenty to get the rest of the way there). On the way back, stop early again to fill up, even if you don’t need it yet, and then you won’t have to worry about it the rest of the trip. Leave early in the day if you plan to do both the Dam and the Canyon.
