In 2006 I left NJ at 4 p.m. and go to DeMoine Iowa by 3 p.m. the next day —–
then went to S. Dakota
stayed a whole day
then went to Denver and stayed a day
then go to Las Vegas.

If you do not stop to see people you can do this is three days.

Most of the rentals offer unlimited local mileage. When you tell then you will drop the car in LV, it could cost you more.

with gas at $3 a plane will be faster and cheaper.

2554 miles in the Atlas, makes it 5 to 6 days. Auto Drive aways would either pay you or let you pay for the gas. Not all companies will even let you drive one-way. Why drive? Flying and then renting is cheaper. If you drive take the southern route this time of year to avoid the snow.

Drove the southern route from southwest CT (about 20 miles outside NYC) in Feb 2005 and I left on 2/10 and arrived in Vegas on 2/14. It was the most boring thing I’ve ever done in my life. If you have the option, definitely fly, its a helluva lot cheaper and quicker.

Sorry, don’t have any info on car rentals.

Okay. NYC to LV is approximately 2525 miles. With an average speed of 65 MPH, drive time is about 40 hours. But no one can possibly drive 40 hours straight thru. Also, you’re not counting any traffic issues, food and/or fuel stops, etc. Assuming you’re going to travel for 15 hours a day - allowing 8 hours for rest, and 1 hour for misc. stopping, it will take about 2 2/3 days to drive. That’s also assuming there’s no side trips to sightsee or anything like that.

Many of the national rental car chains allow unlimited miles, but I don’t know if they’ll allow THIS many miles. You need to check specifically. For a midsize car, you’re looking at an average of $600 for a weeklong rental - picking it up at LaGuardia and dropping off the car in Vegas - double that to drive back to NY. That does not figure in gas, any additional fees (i.e. under 25 driver, insurance, etc.) or any possible tolls.
